Community Guidelines

At Seen, we’re on a mission to help people find their people based on shared experiences, interests, or identities. It is of utmost importance to us that everyone feels safe and respected in our Seen communities. That’s why we’ve created these rules for all our Members, and we take them very seriously.

Please do read on for our specific rules and what happens when they’re broken, but our general approach is this: say you were at a bar, and you started hurling verbal abuse, harassing the staff, or just making people feel uncomfortable and generally bringing a toxic vibe - you would get chucked out. Same goes with Seen.

Rule 1: No d*ckheads.

Everyone has a right to use Seen free of d*ckhead behaviour - which includes harassment, bullying, hate speech, rude or abusive language, misogyny, gaslighting, and threats of violence.

Communities and members who break our rules – especially those who incite violence or promote hate based on identity or vulnerability – will be banned. Where this behaviour constitutes criminal conduct, we won’t hesitate to report it to the authorities. But remember: you don’t have to break a law to be a d*ckhead - you just have to break one of our rules in letter or in spirit.

Rule 2: Seen it, say it, sorted.*

To help keep Seen a safe and friendly place, we want you - our members - to tell us when you see someone breaking our community rules - whether it’s directly impacting you or not. And we want you to tell us when you spot new, up and coming forms of d*ckheadery that may not yet be on our radar. On our side, we promise to keep coming up with new features and resources that are intuitive, easy to use, and, above all else, designed to keep you safe.

When you report d*ckhead behaviour to us, we promise to take it seriously and to act, in accordance with rule 1, and our list of enforcement actions below.

With that said, you may come across communities that are not your cup of tea or whose premise you fundamentally disagree with. In that case, we politely encourage you to keep walking, and not join that community.

*All credit to the British transport police, who really know their way around a catchy slogan for engendering collective accountability!

Rule 3: No hate speech.

There is no place on Seen for hate speech of any kind. This includes content that promotes or condones discrimination, bigotry, hatred, or violence against people based on things like their race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, disability, gender, age, weight, height, appearance, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Our definition of hate speech includes any hurtful or malicious language meant to put someone down. Basically, if you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face, don’t say it on Seen or we will chuck you out.

Rule 4: No catfishing.

Don’t pretend you’re someone you’re not, don’t post photos that aren’t of you, and don’t post photos that don’t accurately represent what you look like. We want everyone on Seen to be able to trust that they are connecting with real, authentic people – that’s why everyone on Seen must verify when signing up.

Also, don’t impersonate, or lie about being affiliated with, any person or entity. This includes parody accounts.

Rule 5: No account clones.

One person, one account. If you try to game the algorithm by making multiple accounts, we will chuck you – and all of your clones – out.

Rule 6: No illegal stuff.

We won’t tolerate any illegal activity on Seen. If we see anything illegal, we will ban your profile and report you to the authorities.

Rule 7: No shameless self-promotion.

Seen is a place for finding your people, not a place to advertise, boost your follower count, sell things, or to promote events, businesses, charities, or political candidates. It’s fine to invite your matches to something that you’re doing, but if the purpose of your profile is to self-promote in one of the ways described here or otherwise, we will ban you from Seen.

Rule 8: No swindling.

Seen has a zero-tolerance policy on scams and predatory behaviour, of any kind. Anyone trying to get their hands on members’ private information for fraudulent or illegal activity will be banned and reported to the authorities. Same goes for anyone caught sharing their own account information for the purpose of receiving money from other members.

We do our best keep out the swindlers, hustlers, and rogues, but we also know that scammers are getting ever more sophisticated, so we really encourage all our members to have a read of this and learn how to protect yourself and others.

Rule 9: No minors.

You must be 18 years of age or older to use Seen. If you see underage people using Seen, report them to us immediately.

Rule 10: No oversharing.

Don’t share any sensitive information – yours or anyone else’s. This includes ID numbers, passport details, passwords, financial information, or unlisted contact information.

Only share phone numbers, email addresses, and/or home/work addresses with someone you trust. This is to protect you and others in our community from identity theft.

What happens when someone breaks the rules?

We really hope we won’t have to end up here, but if we do, here’s what’s going to happen. Spoiler alert: we’ll take a violation of our community rules really seriously. This is our menu of enforcement options - we’ll choose from this based on the seriousness of this offence.

  • Asking you politely to knock it off. Then if you don’t knock it off, asking you a lot less politely

  • Suspending accounts and/or communities, i.e. chucking you out

  • Taking legal action and if needed, involving law enforcement

We’ll also take steps to help make our members feel safe and know that we take their concerns seriously, including removing inappropriate messages or content, and other steps to help remedy the situation.
